The European Film Awards, presented jointly by the European Film Academy and European Film Academy Productions, honour the greatest achievements in European cinema.
The awards are presented in the following categories:
The European Film Academy
The European Film Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting European cinema. Founded in 1988, the Academy seeks to support and connect its 5,000 members and celebrates and promotes their work. Its aims are to share knowledge and to educate audiences of all ages about European cinema. Positioning itself as a leading organisation and facilitating crucial debates within the industry, the Academy strives to unite everyone who loves European cinema, culminating annually in the Month of European Film and the European Film Awards, by including European film heritage in its portfolio and by expanding its focus on young audiences through the European Film Club. Founded in 2006 to produce the European Film Awards Ceremony for television, European Film Academy Productions gGmbH is the in-house production company of the European Film Academy e.V.

Who decides on the Documentary Selection?Documentary experts appointed by the Academy Board decide on a pre-selection. From the pre-selection a committee of Academy Members and documentary experts appointed by the Academy Board selects 12 documentary films for the European Film Awards Documentary Film Selection proposed to the Academy Members to be considered for a nomination.

Who elects the winners?
It is the members of the European Film Academy that vote for the winners in the categories “European Film”, “European Director”, “European Actress”, "European Actor”, “European Screenwriter”, “European Documentary”, "European Short Film - Prix Vimeo" and “European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI”.
A jury consisting of representatives of the different arts and crafts selects the award recipient in each of the eight "Excellence Awards" categories: "European Cinematography", "European Editing", "European Production Design", "European Costume Design", "European Make-Up & Hair", "European Original Score", "European Sound" and "European Visual Effects".
The Academy Board decides upon the recipient of the Honorary Awards: "European Achievement in World Cinema" and "European Lifetime Achievement".
Eurimages selects the Eurimages International Co-production Award to acknowledge the decisive role of co-productions in fostering international exchange.
For the LUX European Audience Award the European Parliament organises free screenings of the nominated films in all European Union countries with subtitles in 24 EU official languages, and afterwards it is the audience voting online for the winner.
A jury of up to 99 young people from all over Europe votes for the European Young Audience Award winner.
For the European University Film Award, the students at each participating partner institution select their favourite film.

How are films nominated?Based on the European Film Awards Feature Film Selection, three to four of the nominations in the categories in the categories “European Film”, “European Director”, “European Actress”, "European Actor”, “European Screenwriter” are voted for by the Academy Members. The Academy Board can add up to two nominations in each category. The nominations in the other award categories are determined by a jury or committee of experts.
