Synopsis

The old track controller Waller sets out on his very last inspection. His walk along the tracks is a walk through time: his childhood in the 20s, his first job, the sad farewell from his friend who goes to war in 1941 never to return. After the war the love of his life: Angelika — a forbidden love, for the industrialist Heindl will never allow his daughter to marry an ordinary track inspector. But then there is an unforeseen twist offate... The road of rememberance leads to people. Wild weeds obscure the memories. In the end, when Waller walks past the last of the buffers, the tracks are buried in waist-high grass. Only a thin strip of railway embankment winding through the countryside can be seen as he moves along it on this very last of his walks.
