Two speleologists, Pedro and Esteban, along with Gabi, Esteban's girlfriend, go to Angosto, a small town with a dwindling population tucked into a moountain zone, where they are to report on the geological and tourist interest a recently-discovered mountain cave there may have. While Pedro and Esteban are exploring the depths of the caves, Gabi is waiting for them in the car further down the mountain. She is attacked and almost raped but manages to escape, as does her assailant. We know he is a salesman whose route takes him along different provincial highways. Two different stories cross paths here, the assailant and the speleogologists. Four more stories come together as the plot unfolds in this small town in the middle of nowhere. When the three outsiders are on their way to report the attack of the Civil Guard, Gabi thinks she recognizes her assailant as they drive by a man on the road. However, the man is really Cecilio, one of the two remainig inhabitants of a deserted village near Angosto. His encounter with the speleologist ends tragically. Tomas, a young Civil Guard, is the first to hear of the tragedy as he's heading home that night. Tomas is unhappily married to his boss's daughter. Aiming to escape from a life he finds stifling, he agrees to cover up the crime in exchange for the one he needs to make a new start.
