Synopsis

In 1988, Camiel - a timid, gay student of dentistry - is run over by a jeep. Behind the wheel is Simon - a coarse Amsterdam hash dealer, the archetype of the heterosexual male. Simon takes Camiel to the emergency room, and an unusual, lifelong friendship starts. At first, Camiel is somewhat intimidated by Simon's rough appearance, behaviour and language. Simon's circle of friends only confirms his first impression. Simon's girlfriend, Sharon, is a wellknown kickboxer. Her best friend Ellen, who works in Simon's coffeeshop, is a one-eyed body builder. And then there is Marco, who is covered with tattoos and who is possibly even wilder than Simon. Never before in his life has Camiel come into contact with a crowd like this. He soon finds out, however, that underneath his harsh exterior, Simon is a friendly and hospitable fellow with an extraordinary joy of living and a great - albeit not always politically correct - sense of humour. Without knowing exactly why, Camiel is drawn more and more into Simon's world. Treated by Simon, he joins the whole gang on a trip to Thailand. During this holiday, an unexpected event seriously puts Simon's and Camiel's friendship to the test, after which they lose touch. Fifteen years later, their paths cross a second time. It is immidiately clear that much has changed in their lives. Simon is suffering from a serious illness, but treats this subject strikingly lightheartedly, as he does the incident which caused their separation fifteen years before. Camiel, now a society dentist and living with lawyer Bram, is drawn to Simon once again. He befriends Simon's nineteen year old daughter Joy, who - together with her thirteen year old brother Nelson - is living with Simon. The two kids attend a posh school and speak with an Amsterdam South accent, as opposed to Simon's broad Amsterdam language. Simon's old friends are still very much a part of his life and happily welcome Camiel back in their midst.
