Director's Statement

DAILY BREAD is based on a short story by J.M Berdyczewski (1865-1921). Berdyczewski's story echoes the traditional Talmud tale that plays out in a simplicity reminiscent of a blues song – the elements driving the story are fairly raw and straightforward, and yet when the story ends one feels one must delve deeper in one’s own mind to glimpse at the truths behind the story. My adaptation tried to reproduce that exact kind of sensation; nonetheless, as a filmmaker I know that one can never really shoot the moon and capture its beauty; all one can really do is shoot its shadow, which in turn might evoke the moon's beauty. In this movie I was searching for the shadows of Berdyczewski's truth, the shadows of my childhood and the shadows of that evasive yet imperial feeling, namely, longing.
