Crna mačka, beli mačor

Synopsis

A heady mixture of slapstick and folklore, Emir Kusturica's black comedy Black Cat, White Cat - which won the Silver Lion at Venice - centres on the lives of Grga Pitic, a gypsy godfather and rubbish-dump tycoon, and Zarije, a cement-works owner. Old friends in their eighties who haven't seen each other for 25 years, they both have trouble with the younger males in their families. Pitic's biggest concern in life is that his grandson, Grga Major, should find a suitable wife, while Zarige's son Matko is ripped off in a black market deal with the gangster Dadan, who then insists he marry his reluctant sister, Afrodita, a woman so small that her nickname is 'Ladybird'. On the day of the wedding, Ladybird escapes, only to run headlong into Grga Major, with whom true romance seems to be on the cards.
