Immediately after the discovery of the daguerreotype photograph in the latter half of the nineteenth century, photography began to be used in anthropological research. The photograph was taken to be absolute truth. Occidental culture proved to itself its own superiority with photographs of "amoral, naked, primitive natives", whose bodily measurements proved undeniably that particular race's deficiencies.
