Synopsis

The lovers live in the same city and they only see each other three times in thirty years. Konrad and Sophie are separated as they attempt to escape from East Berlin in the fall of 1961. From that point on, they live their lives in two diametrically opposed worlds: Sophie in the West, Konrad in the East. How do they cope with the fact that a second's hesitation on Konrad's part during their escape through the city's sewage system keeps them apart for almoast thirty years? What was coincidence and what was choice? And what happens to a love that suddenly can only be expressed secretly and obliquely, leaving it wide open to emotional pitfalls? The story is depicted in four phases, spanning the history of the wall from ist construction to its demise. THE PROMISE sets the lovers' courage and determination against the alienation and the deep wounds inflicted upon them and their friends on both sides of the wall.
