The MATCH FACTORY GIRL follows Aki Kaurismäki "Shadows in Paradise" (1986) and "Ariel" (1988) as the third film in Aki Kaurismäki's "Proletarian Trilogy". The story is not based on Andersen's famous fairytale "The Little Match Girl", yet this still, humane and simply executed portrait of poor Iris, who is shamelessly used and mercilessly oppressed by everyone around her, does indeed have elements of a terrifying fairytale - the wicked mother, the cold-hearted stepfather and a Prince Charming who is only a prince in her imagination. Iris takes a dreadful revenge...
