The Gleaners And I

Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse

France

Synopsis

Shot in the north of France and in Beauce, Jura, Provence, the Pyrenees and Paris between September 1999 and April 2000, The Gleaners examines both a historical subculture and a phenom¬ena of the turn of the Millennium: the foragers, rum-magers and scavengers who, by necessity, chance or choice, pick up left-over items discarded by others. Director Agnes Varda, who describes the film as a wandering-road-documentary", spent seven months with a team of four cameramen driving around France seeking out different varieties of gleaners wherever she could. One of the most moving parts of the documentary, however, is when she turns the camera on herself, "I'm getting old," she says on¬screen. "The end is near." For Varda, ultimately, film¬making is itself a form of gleaning.
