Statement of the director(s)

Some years ago, a close friend told me he had been accused of rape. He claimed he was innocent and feared everyone would hate him. I felt sympathy for him, but at the same time, I struggled with difficult questions: Should I believe him? Could I remain friends with a man accused of rape?
Rape is a topic that often invites strong, clear-cut opinions. But when the accused is someone close to you, someone you care about, things become less black and white. What feels right or wrong is no longer obvious. The film MERCY delves into these challenging, often-avoided aspects: Is there room for doubt and uncertainty in rape cases? Is it permissible to show compassion for a man accused of rape? These are questions we rarely dare to ask, because they’re uncomfortable – and many fear saying the wrong thing.
I’m a storyteller drawn to such challenges. For the past ten years, I’ve worked with sensitive, taboo subjects through documentary projects. I’m passionate about diving into complex social issues to open up new perspectives and challenge established narratives.
With MERCY, I want to provoke thought. I hope the film leaves the audience with more questions than answers, and sparks discussions – about Guro’s dilemma, and our own instincts when faced with moral uncertainty. My goal is to ignite debate and encourage a different kind of conversation around this deeply sensitive topic – not just in public discourse, but around lunch tables and in classrooms.
MERCY is my debut as a fiction director. It’s inspired by a true story and rooted in extensive research. Furthermore, I am currently developing a feature film which centers around the same topic.
