Synopsis

Orhan Şahin, a writer-editor who has spent years living overseas, returns to Istanbul after being asked to work on the first book by well-known director Deniz Soysal. Deniz lives in a waterside mansion on the Bosphorus with his parents, who are well into their twilight years. When Deniz mysteriously disappears on Orhan’s very first night in the city, Orhan suddenly finds himself in the thick of the family members, inscrutable friends and complicated relationships Deniz has left behind. Rediscovering Istanbul through new eyes after so many years away, Orhan will begin to experience forgotten feelings and write once again ...

Biography

Ferzan Ozpetek was born in Kalamış, a district on Istanbul’s Asian shore. He has been living in Rome since 1976. The highly successful feature he wrote and directed in 1997, STEAM: THE TURKISH BATH, screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Following this in 1999 with HAREM SUARE and in 2001 with THE IGNORANT FAIRIES, he
quickly became one of Europe’s most talked about directors and consolidated his reputation with several more features, including: FACING WINDOWS (2003), SACRED HEART (2005), SATURN IN OPPOSITION (2007), A PERFECT DAY (2008), LOOSE CANNONS (2010), A MAGNIFICENT PRESENCE (2012), and FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS (2014). He directed the Verdi operas, Aida and La Traviata, in 2011 and 2012 respectively. His films have been shown in many countries around the world and garnered numerous prestigious awards. In 2008, a retrospective of his work was held at MoMa in New York.
