Director's Statement
FLOWERS BLOOMING IN OUR THROATS is a cinematic poem in response to the worldwide pandemic of 2020. It was filmed on 16mm kodak reversal film on location in Brussels (Belgium) in July 2020. FLOWERS BLOOMING IN OUR THROATS portrays particular visual representations of domesticity, playfulness and tension through various gestures and the manipulation of daily objects. It features the hands of my lover, myself, family members, close friends and fellow artists based in Brussels. My intention was to investigate the notion of home as a place of contradiction and ambiguity - a space where one should feel safe, and experience comfort, while at once, it is also where one can be invaded and abused. With an intimate approach to filmmaking, I work intuitively and improvisationally. In the editing, I play with the repetition of images, creating visual sequences and accidental similarities in order to induce free associations. I see gestures as containers forever spilling over, encouraging imagination, bringing the viewers into a state of increased sensitivity to their everyday lives, everyday actions. In general, I’m interested in the relationship of what we perceive and what we know.
