Synopsis

In a small village of the North of France, an attack alert has been set off due to the combination of two events: the beginning of the hunting season and an argument between drunk Polish workers.

Biography

Born in France, Morgane Dziurla-Petit studied Cinema at La Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, and then Film Production in Cannes. She discovered even more about the world of cinema during her professional experiences at the Cannes Film Festival and Roy Andersson's film production. In 2016, she traveled to Tokyo, shooting the art video MEMORIES OF ANOTHER I, using self-generative editing. She moved to Sweden in 2017, where she works for Vilda Bomben Film AB. Here, she keeps on creating new narratives, crossing the borders between documentary and fiction.

interview

How long did it take to make your short?
We started the project in November 2017 and finished it in the end of 2019. The shooting took nine days in March 2018 and the editing took four weeks over a period of three3 months.

Was it difficult to get financing?
We had a good contact with the Swedish Film Institute and they believed in the film from early on. We completed the budget with Film I Väst and the city of Gothenburg.

Which thoughts come to mind concerning a “European cinema community”?
That it is something very important to me. I am from France but work in Sweden. My two first short films were shot in France while produced by Sweden and I am now working on films that will be shot in Sweden. While co-production between the Scandinavian countries is something important, I would like to create more links between my productions from Sweden and co-productions in France and Belgium.

If you owned a theatre for one night, which films would you screen?
I think that I would screen short films. There are masterpieces in this format but it is unfortunately very hard to get to see them in theatres. I would like them to be more often shown on a regular basis everywhere, as pre-films or in groups of shorts.

What is your next project?
I have two projects that I am working on at the same time. One , called GUDARS SKYMNING, is a feature film set in the west of Sweden where we follow Nora a teenager who lives in the forgotten village of Gudalyckan. No one has ever left the village. That has always been the case. But one day everything changes and Nora questions what is real - and whether she really needs to be stuck in the Gudalyckan forever.
The other is EXCESS WILL SAFE US, the feature / series. As you may have guessed, it is based on my short of the same name. We will get to follow the characters more and see more of the crazy things happening in Villereau.

Director's Statement

EXCESS WILL SAVE US is a documentary made as a tragicomedy. I wish this film makes the audience want to open to the strangeness and the melancholia they have in themselves. That they question themselves about their paranoias and judgments. I shot it in Villereau, a village that is very important to me as a part of my family lives there. I always found the place both comic and sad. One day, the inhabitants of the village panicked believing there was a terrorist attack there while nothing had happened. I thought of it as a beautiful metaphor of the place so that was the time for me to make a film about Villereau.
